The Huemer family in America (our branch of it, anyhow) was founded by Martin Huemer and his wife Jenny Leikas, who immigrated here from from Germany in the late 1800s. They had four children: Elsie, Hilda (who died young), Richard Martin, and Peggy. Richard Martin, a noted cartoonist, had three sons with his wife Polly (daughter of Peter Prevosto and Marie Bonenfant): Richard Peter, David Alexander, and Allen Anthony. After that the family tree got more complicated, so we recommend you hit the relevant button at left if you want more details.
So What's a Huemer?
The Huemers are talented and accomplished in many fields. You may have been guided to this site by a search for a particular topic, such as animation, in which Richard Martin ("Dick") Huemer was a bona fide pioneer, or philosophy, in which young Michael Huemer has already made a mark. We hope you’ll linger awhile at our site in order to sample the Huemers’ many contributions to the arts, sciences, and society. Check our experts’ advice on health and wealth. I Still Don't Know What a Huemer Is.
It's a proper noun, pronounced HEW'-mer and not YOUmer, HWAYmer, hooEMmer, HEEmer, or any other annoying way. It sounds like "humor", which makes it a great name for cartoonists (like Dick was) but rather an inappropriate one for doctors, philosophers, investment advisors, and the like. Nevertheless, we Huemers manage to get by. Ah (you ask), but what does it mean? Well, according to Markus Huemer of Vienna, the name derives from "huama," a caretaker of cows on the huam (Austrian dialect for "alp")--so at heart we're just Austrian cowboys. Know Your Huemers!
This month's featured Huemer is Peter Eric, born to Richard Peter and Gloria Wong on June 17, 1967. He is being honored first among Huemers because he had the good sense to reserve the family name as a URL. Peter grew up in Calabasas Hills, Calif. and earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering at UCLA in 1990. After graduate studies for his M.S., Peter moved to Santa Cruz, where he married Valerie Bettenhausen in 1995. Peter and his wife own User-Friendly Computing, a company specializing in service, sales, repair, upgrades, and networks for microcomputers. The couple has no children.
